Seniors Urged to Take Precautions During Cold Snap

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - State officials are encouraging older
Alabama residents to take extra precautions because of the frigid
cold weather that has gripped the state.

Alabama Department of Senior Services Commissioner Irene Collins
encouraged people to keep a close eye on elderly relatives, friends
and neighbors. She said the elderly are often more susceptible to
hypothermia because they sometimes don't realize they are becoming

She encouraged older Alabama residents to take precautions
including dressing in layers and wearing a hat and gloves when they
go outside.

She also encouraged anyone using a space heater to keep it a
least 3 feet from furniture and draperies.
