Southeast Discussion

THE COASTAL LOW THAT KEPT US COOL AND CLOUDY ON SUNDAY HAS EXITED THE MID-ATLANTIC COAST AND IS MAKING ITS WAY UP THE EASTERN SEABORD. IR AND VIS IMAGERY SHOW A NEW POLAR LOW MOVING INTO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST WHILE A BROAD UPPER LOW IS POSITIONED OVER THE IOWA/MISSOURI BORDER WITH A POTENT COLD FRONT TRAILING OVER THE CENTRAL PLAINS. A LARGE AREA OF LOW-LEVEL CLOUDS FORMED OVERNIGHT WITH RESIDUAL MOISTURE LEFT BEHIND FROM YESTERDAY`S RAINFALL. THIS CLOUD COVER IS EVIDENT ON VISIBLE IMAGERY WITH A SOLID DECK OF LOW-LEVEL STRATUS COVERING THE SOUTHEASTERN U.S. THE ABUNDANCE OF CLOUDS HAS KEPT OUR TEMPERATURES RELATIVELY COOL WITH A CURRENT TEMPERATURE IN THE MID 6OS. SUFFICIENT SURFACE HEATING TO THE SOUTH HAS ALLOWED FOR US TO BREAK OUT OF THE OVERCAST AND SKIES ARE NOW MOSTLY SUNNY. ONLY MINOR SURFACE HEATING IS EXPECTED HOWEVER...AS ONLY A FEW HOURS OF DAYLIGHT REMAIN...EXPECT HIGH TEMPS TO ONLY REACH THE UPPER 60S. THE OVERALL AIRMASS CONTINUES TO BE FAIRLY MOIST WITH DEWPOINTS IN THE UPPER 50S TO LOW 60S. THE PRESENCE OF THE SUBTROPICAL JET OVER THE CENTRAL AND EASTERN GULF OF MEXICO WILL CONTINUE TO PROMOTE MID AND UPPER LEVEL MOIST FLOW. THIS SHOULD ALLOW FOR SOME MID TO HIGH LEVEL CLOUDS THROUGH THE DAY AND INTO TONIGHT. ONCE THE SUN SETS...WE MAY SEE LOW CLOUDS BUILD IN AGAIN THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING. THE 1200Z SOUNDING FROM TAE REVEALED A VERY MOIST LAYER UP TO AROUND 950MB WITH A SHARP SUBSIDENCE INVERSION AND DRY AIR ABOVE 850MB. THIS PATTERN IS EXPECTED TO HOLD THROUGH THE NIGHT AND WITH MODEST MOISTURE IN THE LOW LEVELS...A LOW STRATUS DECK WILL BE POSSIBLE. OTHERWISE...EXPECT FAIR CONDITIONS THROUGH THE EVENING.
