Power outages are already widespread from North Carolina through eastern Virginia and up into southeastern Maryland due to the combination of strong winds and a saturated ground from all the heavy rainfall. Residents in this region should be prepared for an extended period of blackouts and have plenty of food, water and batteries on hand.
Trees, especially those that still have their foliage, are much more susceptible to being uprooted when the ground is saturated and soft.
By Thursday night and Friday, additional power outages due to fallen trees and downed power lines should be anticipated over coastal New Jersey, and perhaps as far north as extreme southeastern Long Island if the heavier rain gets that far north.
