Big Surge of Summerlike Warmth

It's coming! We guarantee it. Beginning Friday, temperatures will skyrocket from the Midwest to the Northeast, and on Saturday, a broad swath from Missouri to New England will record highs in the 80s. When it gets this warm this quickly, it feels like a full-fledged heat wave though no 90s are expected this time.

The rapid onset of warm weather spells sunburn for many. There is no getting around the fact that if you are out mowing the yard for an hour or so your face and arms will be reddened by the sun. It always happens to me this time of year. You'd think I'd learn to use sunscreen by now.

The heat will be transported into the Midwest and Northeast by a broad southwesterly flow. This is being made possible by a large northward shift of the jet stream.
