Flood-threatened town urges residents: Stay out
VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) - Valley City, N.D., has a message to its residents as the swollen Sheyenne River recedes: Stay away.
Officials are urging residents to stay out of the way as they work to fix the flood-damaged sewer system. And Mayor Mary Lee Nielson told nonessential businesses to stay closed for at least
this week.
She says she's worried because she's seeing more traffic and only around 400 homes were evacuated in the town with a population of 7,000.
She says people may not understand the consequences of putting more pressure on the city's fragile roads, bridges and services. High water has cut off seven of the town's eight bridges and the sewer system still isn't usable.
Nielson says the town will likely be using portable potties for another month.
