MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama agency will assist 19 families
facing a May 1 FEMA deadline to leave federally funded Hurricane
Katrina housing.
Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs director
Bill Johnson says the families, mostly in southwest Alabama, could
remain in their travel trailers and mobile homes under a state plan
to transfer ownership from the federal government to a faith-based community organization.
The organization has not yet been chosen but the plan calls for
FEMA to donate the housing stock to the state as surplus.
ADECA will then transfer it to the faith-based organization,
which would allow the occupants to remain where they are "with
minimal disruption" to their lives, Johnson said.
