Lake Wind Advisory

By: NWS
By: NWS

A COLD AIRMASS WILL CONTINUE TO POUR INTO THE REGION TODAY ON BRISK NORTHWEST WINDS. SUSTAINED WINDS WILL BE UP AROUND 20 MPH WITH FREQUENT GUSTS TO 30 MPH ON AREA LAKES. WINDS OF THIS MAGNITUDE WILL CREATE HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS FOR BOATERS... PARTICULARLY ON THE LARGER LAKES SUCH AS SEMINOLE AND TALQUIN... AND THE WALTER F GEORGE RESERVOIR. THE COLDEST TEMPERATURES DURING THIS LATE SEASON COLD SNAP WILL BE FELT IN THE PREDAWN HOURS WEDNESDAY MORNING AS THE CENTER OF THE ARCTIC AIRMASS SETTLES SOUTH OF THE AREA. IN ADDITION TO LIGHT OR CALM WINDS...THE SKY WILL BE CLEAR AND THE AIRMASS VERY DRY CREATING NEARLY CONDITIONS THAT WILL ALLOW TEMPERATURES TO PLUMMET TO WELL BELOW SEASONABLE LEVELS. FREEZE DURATIONS ARE EXPECTED TO BE BRIEF AND LIMITED TO MAINLY RURAL AREAS AWAY FROM THE COAST AND OTHER WATER BODIES SUCH AS RIVERS. URBAN CENTERS WILL LIKELY NOT FREEZE. WHILE THE FREEZE MAY BE MINIMAL...WE ARE BECOMING INCREASING CONFIDENT THAT FROST WILL DEVELOP AWAY FROM THE IMMEDIATE COAST...EVEN WITHIN URBAN AREAS. PERSONS WITH AGRICULTURAL INTERESTS OR WITH SENSITIVE OUTDOOR PLANTS SHOULD TAKE PRECAUTIONS TO PROTECT THEM TONIGHT. A FREEZE WARNING MEANS SUB-FREEZING TEMPERATURES ARE IMMINENT OR HIGHLY LIKELY. THESE CONDITIONS COULD KILL CROPS AND OTHER SENSITIVE VEGETATION. A LAKE WIND ADVISORY INDICATES THAT WINDS WILL CAUSE ROUGH CHOP ON AREA LAKES. SMALL BOATS WILL BE ESPECIALLY PRONE TO CAPSIZING.
