1 dead, 7 injured as severe storms pelt Georgia, Alabama

ATLANTA (AP) - One person is dead and at least 7 injured after overnight thunderstorms swept Georgia and Alabama with tornadoes,
hail and lightening.

A spokesman for the Georgia Emergency Management Agency says the fatality was reported in Hancock County in east-central Georgia.
There were no more details.

Fierce thunderstorms that rolled over Alabama and Georgia starting late Wednesday uprooted trees and downed power lines in dozens of counties.

Authorities reported at least three confirmed tornadoes in Georgia. An apparent tornado uprooted trees in Geneva in southern Alabama on Wednesday evening.

Damage assessment teams were expected to survey the storm damaged areas after daybreak.

The storm system gave way to calmer weather and cooler temperatures Thursday.
