DALLAS (AP) - Two University of North Texas astronomers think
they've found two pieces of flaming debris that streaked through
the sky, alarming residents near Dallas.
The scientists say what they found are pieces of a meteor that
is black like charcoal on the outside with a concrete gray rock
under the crust.
Ron DiLulio and Preston Starr say they found the pieces
yesterday in a pasture about 70 miles south of Dallas. They say the
samples are "size of large pecans."
The astronomers placed the samples in ZipLoc bags to keep out
the air. They plan to transfer the samples to membrane cases and
take them to the university for additional study.
People on Sunday reported seeing a fireball streak across the
sky and DiLulio says the reason it created such a fireball was
because the meteor expanded and broke into pieces.
