Windchill factor, frostbite, and frozen pipes are not words typically thought of when thinking about wiregrass weather. Dothan rand in 2009 with a balmy, seventy five degree forecast, but this week...it's another story.
"it was a little cold this morning, its been relatively warm, hunting season's been a little dissappointing because of the weather" said hunter Donald Hovey. But other hunters and cold air lovers should be pleased with this week. It has been six years since Dothan has seen temperatures like this, and January was the month we achieved them.
Still, it comes as a shock to some when temperatures have fluctuated so drastically the past two months.
"it keeps changing back n forth I don't know when it's going to stay cold" said Dothan resident Jordan Hardee, who left his jacket home today.
But wether you welcome the chill or not, it can be dangerous if you aren't prepared. Now is the time to check on the elderly, and any outdoor pets. Drip your faucets overnight to prevent pipes from freezing, and bring in any outdoor plants.
Brad Hardy of the Wiregrass Dothan Rescue Mission told News 4,
"unfortunately some of our guys they do have an alcohol problem, and theyll drink their alcohol to stay warm and won't realize how cold its gotten and they fall asleep and freeze to death and thats what we're concerned about"
But for people who have lived in places accostomed to the harshness of winter, teens for a few days isn't so bad.
"Compared to chicago weather, this is a piece of cake! thats rough weather up there!" said Jerry Peacock.
Temperatures will begin to moderate at the beginning of next week, but until then dress in layers if you head out early!
