Railroad operator CSX says it is rerouting some traffic due to damage to some of its tracks from Hurricane Gustav.
The company said Wednesday that it has completed its initial inspection of track and terminals in the Gulf Coast region.
It said no significant damage occurred to any of its bridges or terminals,
but it identified at least 21 miles of track with substantial impact.
CSX said repairs to those tracks will take at least two weeks.
An average of seven to 10 trains a day will continue to be rerouted through alternative gateways at Memphis, Tenn.; Birmingham, Ala.;
and East St. Louis, Ill.
Some customers may experience slightly longer transit times over
the temporary routes, the company said.
The company said that its preliminary estimates suggest that the damage won't be material to its operating income in the current quarter.
CSX Corp. owns companies providing rail, intermodal and rail-to-truck loading services, connecting more than 70 river, ocean and lake ports, as well as more than 200 short line railroads.
Its principal operating company, CSX Transportation Inc., operates the largest railroad in the eastern United States with a 21,000-mile rail network linking commercial markets in 23 states, the District of Columbia, and two Canadian provinces.
