Recent and ongoing rains have curtailed concerns about the midsummer dry pattern that has led to drought conditions.

For many in the WTVY-TV area, August rainfall so far has exceeded the average for the entire month of August.

Dothan has officially received 4.75 inches of rain this month (through mid afternoon Aug 19). The average for the complete month of August for Dothan is 4.68".

Interestingly, the last four Augusts have been above average in rainfall, with 2008 & 2009 Augusts each recording in excess of 8.5".

In the WTVY area, the regions listed as having moderate drought conditions have shrunk to extreme southeast Alabama and extreme southwest Georgia. Since this recent update (Monday Aug 16) the rains have continued, so next week's update will show even better news.

The recent wet pattern is forecast to continue at least into early next week.
