They're one of the most striking symbols of the American west, yet the
future of several thousand American mustangs is in danger. Years of drought have greatly reduced grasslands available for the wild horses to graze. As a result, thousands have been rounded up and placed in federal holding facilities awaiting adoption.
To reduce the number of mustangs in holding, Congress ordered the Bureau of Land Management to sell many of the older horses "without restriction." Animal advocates fear many of the older mustangs will be sold for slaughter - the meat sent overseas for human consumption.
The Bureau asked Ford Motor Company to intervene to save 52 mustangs that had been sold to a meat-processing facility. Ford bought the mustangs and donated them to a wild horse sanctuary in South Dakota. But the effort isn't stopping there.
Now, Ford and the government are announcing a massive effort to save much larger numbers of mustangs. Working with various American Indian reservations, the Bureau and the auto company are combining to relocate the thousands of horses currently in holding. Together, they're saving the horses from slaughter and returning them to their rightful home in the wild.
