Join local author Danielle Wallace at the Dothan-Houston County Library for fun, inspirational creative writing workshops. Teens will be able to express themselves using different genres of writing, ranging from poetry to fiction. These workshops are free, so grab your pen, notepad, and your imagination to make a difference in the world around you. If you know a teen that would love to attend, share this information with them.

The City of Dothan and the Wiregrass District Patriot Guard Riders invite the public and ALL First Responders to attend a Memorial Service in honor of those First Responders who made the ultimate sacrifice during the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.
Guest speakers include Senator Harri Anne Smith, Mayor MIke Schmitz, Sheriff Donald Valenza, Dothan Police and Fire Chiefs and former VFW State Commander Ed Pritchard.

3rd Annual Emergency Preparedness Fair and Safety Saturday

The fun filled family day event is designed to raise awareness about home safety and individual emergency preparedness.
The preparedness and safety event features awareness displays and demonstrations to help citizens see how a few simple steps now can increase safety and emergency preparedness in homes, businesses and communities throughout the county.
Emergency response vehicles and resources, such as the mobile command post, hazardous materials vehicles, Police/Fire/EMS vehicles, Search and Rescue Dogs will be on site. Free safety preparedness "how to" literature such as how to build an emergency supply kit and develop a family emergency communications plan will be distributed.

Christmas "Life" Bazaar

Saturday, November 1st, 9 till 4: Sav-A-Life of Dale County will host the organization’s second annual Christmas “Life” Bazaar, at the Ozark Civic Center, 320 College Street, Ozark AL, featuring a variety of arts and crafts as well as home-based businesses, with items ranging from Christmas centerpieces and wreaths to home décor, baked goods, coffees, teas, jewelry, gourd art, repurposed wood, candles, soaps, lotions, many children’s items, and most anything handmade. There will be door prizes as well as a silent auction and raffles, entertainment, children’s activities and refreshments. Tickets are $5, children ten and under are free. Vendor spaces available. Sav-A-Life of Dale County is a pregnancy resource center serving surrounding area counties. Wiregrass Model Railroad Show

National Peanut Festival Fairgrounds, 5622 US Hwy 231 South, three miles south of Dothan
Vendors from throughout the Southeast will display more than 100 tables of train –related merchandise and several large model railroad layouts will be in operation. The show will also feature door prizes and concessions both days. An outdoor train ride for children will be offered for a small additional charge on both days, weather permitting.
Admission is $5.00 for adults and free for children under age 12.

Animal Adventures

Landmark Park
(DOTHAN--) Landmark Park will present the next “Animal Adventures” on Friday June 27 at 10 a.m. These special, one-hour educational programs provide unique opportunities to learn about our natural world. Children ages 5 and older are encouraged to come with their youth groups and families to see the wonder of native and exotic animals.

Homing pigeons are incredible birds that have an innate homing ability which allows them to return from incredible distances to their nesting area. These birds have been used throughout history in several ways including army messengers and to deliver medical information. Join John Ross Helms, member of the Wiregrass Racing Pigeon Club as he shares his 30 years worth of experience raising and racing these spectacular birds. Mr. Helms will have several birds available for guests to see up close and then he will release the birds to return to their home.

Programs begin at 10 a.m. in the Interpretive Center at Landmark Park. A noon program may be available if the morning session fills. Admission is free with paid admission to the park ($4 for adults, $3 for children 3-12, free for members and children 2 and under). Reservations are required, plus a 50 percent deposit for groups of 15 or more.

Landmark Park, home of the Alabama Agricultural Museum, is a 135-acre historical and natural science park located on U.S. Highway 431 North in Dothan, Ala. For more information and to register for a program, contact the park at 334-794-3452.

PorktoberQue

The 3rd annual Oktoberfest and barbecue competition, PorktoberQue, will again be held the last weekend of September at the Houston County Farm Center in Dothan. The event features BBQ teams competing for $7700.00 in prize money under KCBS (Kansas City Barbecue Society) sanctioning and also promotes a German-style Oktoberfest. There are two stages featuring both polka music and contemporary music, an indoor biergarten, a “man cave” with TV’s for watching your favorite football games, a cornhole tournament, free bounce houses for the kids to play on, shopping with vendors and many food-related activities.
