Who is eligible?
Anyone 18 yrs. of age or older who has been deemed pre diabetic through a clinical lab test given by their doctor OR anyone who has taken a Diabetes screening test and found they were at risk. A support person is also welcome to accompany the participant. 86 million American adults have prediabetes and of those 86 million, 9 out of 10 don’t even know it. I would encourage anyone with a family hx of diabetes, anyone overweight or over the age of 60 to take a few minutes to take the risk test. The test can be found on the American Diabetes Association’s website at diabetes.org. We also have a risk assessment on the SARCOA site as well sarcoa.org

What is prediabetes?
A person with prediabetes has a blood sugar level higher than normal, but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes. Having high blood sugar places that individual at significant risk for developing T2 diabetes and other serious health problems, including heart disease and stroke. Our program is designed to guide participants towards long term lifestyle changes that have a positive impact on their health – changes such as healthier eating, reducing stress and getting more physical activity.

What are the class details?
The DPP is a yearlong, lifestyle change program. We will meet weekly for 16 weeks, then have 6 monthly follow up sessions. The next session begins July 20th and will be held on Thursday mornings from 10-11 at the Rose Hill Community Senior Center. The program curriculum is evidence based, not a quick fix, fad diet program. Reaching weight loss and physical activity goals takes both time and support, so that is the reason for the year long time commitment. I would definitely say that cutting your risk for developing T2diabetes in half is a great tradeoff for that time though! SARCOA invites all eligible candidates to join the Diabetes Prevention Program and make a change for life!
