AACFCU is partnering with the Coffee, Dale, Houston, Geneva, Henry, Pike and Barbour County Sheriff's Departments to be a drop-off location for Operation Toy Drop benefiting children and families staying at Children's of Alabama in Birmingham. New, unwrapped toys may be dropped off at any AACFCU location or local Sheriff’s office in the Wiregrass area until December 4, 2013. The Sheriff's Departments will then transport the toys collected to the hospital by helicopter as part of the "Toy Drop" special event which includes patients and families looking on as Santa helps unload the toys.
Toys collected through Operation Toy Drop will be distributed through Children's of Alabama's Sugar Plum Shop. The Sugar Plum Shop is an in-hospital toy store built and operated by hospital staff, corporate partners and community volunteers who invite parents of currently hospitalized patients to "shop" free of charge for gifts for the patient and siblings. Over the years, more than 500 children have benefited from the Sugar Plum Shop annually. More than 500 volunteers supported families at Children's through the Sugar Plum Shop and financial support for the Sugar Plum Shop has allowed Children's of Alabama to expand Child Life services to its Emergency Department helping children cope with the stress and uncertainty of hospitalization.
