September 13 & 14: Annual Patchwork Festival Center of Quilt Filled Weekend
Camden, Alabama – Black Belt Treasures Cultural Arts Center (BBTCAC) will host its annual Patchwork Festival on Saturday, September 14th, from 10am to 3pm, in conjunction with the annual production of The Gee’s Bend Play, Wilcox ArtWorks’ Patchwork Quilt Walk, and Gee’s Bend Raised’s Airing of the Quilts.
Throughout the day, demonstrations will be given by Wilcox County quilters Tyree McCloud, Rennie Miller, and Mary Margaret Pettway, Hale County quilter Deborah Carter, Simply Making It’s Laura Spencer (Dallas County), wood sculptor John Sheffey (Dallas County), Monroeville potter Sam Williams, and textile artists Sheree Sullivan (Montgomery County) and Leslie Zacchini (Wilcox County). BBTCAC artists and volunteers will be hosting one of the most popular features of the day, art activities for youth of all ages. Pike Road, Alabama author Stacy Harris will be discussing and signing copies of her newest book “Recipes & Tips for Sustainable Living.” Stacy writes for outdoor and hunting magazines, as well as other publications, on the benefits and rewards of eating fresh from the wild.
This years’ entertainment will feature a juried selection of regional musicians, bands and storytellers. Interested musicians and performers are invited to apply by picking up an application at Black Belt Treasures or emailing info@blackbelttreasures.com. Special guest, Linda Vice, Director of the Southwest Alabama Tourism and Film Office and locally acclaimed storyteller, will be sharing stories about “My Patchwork Life in the Black Belt.” Activities and demonstrations by artists will begin at 10:00 a.m. and continue until 3:00 p.m. at BBTCAC located at 209 Claiborne Street in historic downtown Camden. Delicious lunches will be available onsite through Wilcox Area Chamber of Commerce. The 2013 Patchwork Festival is made possible by the generous support of the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the Black Belt Community Foundation, the Daniel Foundation of Alabama, and contributions from members of the Black Belt Treasures Guild.
Wilcox ArtWorks is coordinating a Patchwork Quilt Walk on Friday, September 13 and Saturday, September 14. Historic and Contemporary Quilts will be on display at various churches and businesses around Camden. Tickets are available through any Wilcox ArtWorks member or at BBTCAC for $10 ($5 for quilt exhibitors). All Tours will begin at BBTCAC. Gee’s Bend Raised will be hosting the Airing of the Quilts Exhibit on Saturday from 9am – 4pm in Boykin (124 Rosewood Lane). Airing of the quilts was a tradition among the women of Gee’s Bend that was born out of necessity but was also a time to celebrate and show off their artistic and creative talents to their peers. On display will be never before exhibited quilts of Marie “Mooney” Pettway, quilts from the collection of M. Virginia Pettway, and wrought iron sculptures by Anvil Forge.
Gee’s Benders Productions will be performing Elizabeth Wilder’s Gee’s Bend Play at Wilcox Central High School Auditorium in Camden on Friday, September 13 at 6pm, and Saturday, September 14 at 4pm.
