The Brown Bag of the Wiregrass is a supplemental grocery program that benefits seniors age 60 and older who primarily depend on Social Security for their income. Seniors are given groceries on the third Wednesday of the month to help bridge the gap between checks when their funds have normally been depleted. The Brown Bag Program has 19 distribution sites spread throughout Houston, Henry, Coffee, Dale, Geneva, and Barbour counties. The Brown Bag program is supported entirely by contributions and volunteers.
The Brown Bag Program currently has an urgent need for volunteers to administer the program. In Dothan, volunteers are needed from 7:45 – 11 a.m. Sept. 2, Oct. 7, Nov. 4, and Dec. 2 to help pack food for the six-county area.
Volunteers are needed on an ongoing basis in Enterprise to pack bags for individuals from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at HRDC, 100 George Wallace Drive.
