LNT Safe Haven is a pre-crisis family and domestic violence awareness coalition. LNT Safe Haven was established to provide prevention services to families and individuals who may be experiencing violence but have not endured a crisis or disruption in the family setting. LNT defines domestic violence/family violence as a pattern of coercive behavior characterized by the domination and control of one person over another. Domestic violence generally occurs within intimate partner relationships. Family violence occurs within the family and can be adult against child, child against adult, adult against adult, or child against child. Domestic/Family violence can be physical, psychological, emotional, verbal, sexual, and/or economic abuse.
The curriculum we offer takes a total of 8 weeks to complete. There are 8 modules that take a total of 45 minutes to an hour to complete. This curriculum can be offered on a one-on-one basis or in a group setting. Each module has an expected outcome goal the individual must accomplish. As advocates, we will assist our consumers in understanding the definition of domestic abuse, how to maintain a healthy relationship, the warning signs, and how you can help another individual. We will conduct the group classes over at 119 South Foster Street Dothan, Alabama Suite 104 staring Jan. 2016. Each individual will receive a certificate of completion when finished with the curriculum and there will be a social gathering twice a year to celebrate the individuals who have completed the program. We have collaborated with Christina Kelley, the founder of ACTS Counseling Services for those consumers who need continual services after completing our program. We are very excited about this collaboration.
LNT Safe Haven will begin providing weekly family mentoring/educational support groups in January 2016. These support groups will be eight weeks long, lasting for one hour each week. We plan to hold four sessions throughout the year. The intention of this group will be to educate families on how to prevent further incidents of violence within the home. We are making plans to begin holding monthly support groups for women currently experiencing violence or those who have survived and are looking to move past the pain they’ve experienced. LNT Safe Haven will host “Pretty Is, As Pretty Does” on March 5, 2016. This event will be held at the George Washington Carver Interpretive Museum located on North Foster Street in Dothan. The purpose of this event will be to empower, uplift, and encourage women who are experiencing family violence. This event will be limited to fifteen women and their children in the community. Those interested in participating in this event can register through our Facebook or webpage, LNTSafeHaven.org. Registration will begin December 1, 2015 and continue until February 16, 2015. Early registration is recommended. We are currently seeking sponsors who are interested in supporting the first Wiregrass Domestic Violence walk. We are tentatively planning this event for October 2016 and would like to reach out to community leaders and other agencies who are interested in making this walk a success and continuing as an annual event.
