SEACT Presents "Dearly Departed"

Event Dates and Times

10/20/2015 - 10/24/2015
Cultural Arts Center
Cost? = $18.00 and $16.00 for military and senior citizen

When the patriarch of the Turpin family keels over dead, the struggle to get him buried involves the whole clan, including the not-so-grieving widow who wants to put "Mean and Surly" on the tombstone. In the Baptist backwoods of the Bible Belt, this beleaguered family proves that living and dying in the South are seldom tidy and always hilarious. Amidst the chaos, the Turpins turn for comfort to their friends and neighbors, an eccentric community of misfits who just manage to pull together and help each other through their hours of need, and finally, the funeral. SEACT presents Dearly Departed on the Cultural Arts Center stage Oct. 20-24.

Eufaula Indian Summer Festival

Event Dates and Times

Saturday, October 10th
Eufaula, AL
For several decades Eufaula has hosted the annual Indian Summer Festival the second weekend in October. The event, sponsored by the Eufaula Barbour County Chamber, is expected to draw even bigger crowds this year. Two new additions are being added to this year’s line-up. The annual Pet Parade with proceeds to support the Barbour County Humane Society will start the day at 9:30. This year’s theme is “Star Wars Pets.” The street will still be lined with numerous arts and crafts vendors, kid’s activities and food vendors, along with the ALAGA Car Show taking place from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 10.

Taking center stage on Saturday afternoon, the festival will feature the Lake Eufaula Outdoor Expo, Bluff City Barbeque Challenge and live music in the Chamber’s side yard. The Expo is free of charge to the public and open from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Expo will feature vendors, experts and outdoor enthusiasts promoting a variety of outdoor activities. Event organizers are recruiting those who hunt, fish, camp, kayak, bird, bike and more. An archery demonstration will take place around 3:00 p.m. The general public should be able to test their skills with contests that afternoon. The Chamber was awarded a tourism grant from the Alabama Tourism Department last year for this year’s event. Vendors are still being accepted. Contact the Chamber today to sign up and reserve your spot.

The Bluff City BBQ Challenge allows pit masters from around the area to go head-to-head and receive bragging rights on just who has the best barbecue on the bluff. The contest will feature all day cooking outside at the Chamber. Judging by a panel of local celebrities will take place at 6:00 p.m. The People’s Choice Champion will be decided by the public. Vendors are welcome to sell barbecue from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. and votes will be collected. Live music provided by Trest Richarson and Brittany Avery will be available on the side porch from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Anyone interested in competing in the inaugural Bluff City BBQ Challenge can see a full list of rules and fill out an entry form at www.EufaulaChamber.com.

The Chamber acts as the primary source for promotion of tourism in Eufaula. Sallie Garrison, Executive Director, stated, “The Chamber is committed to promoting the exceptional resources of our community. By adding the Lake Eufaula Outdoor Expo, we feel it is a perfect match for combining our greatest assets with the activities people enjoy most about our community. The lake, the refuge, and the abundant hunting land all contribute to bringing folks here throughout the year. Showcasing them at the festival just makes sense.”

Wiregrass Area Buddy Walk

Event Dates and Times

October 31, 2015
Landmark Park
Cost? = $5 Participate Fee
More Info = To register for the event you can go to http://www.ds-stride.org/wiregrassbuddywalk/profiles/team/FRIENDS

The 8th Annual Wiregrass Area Buddy Walk will be held Saturday, October 31st @ Landmark Park.

The Buddy Walk helps celebrate October as National Down Syndrome Awareness Month. The Buddy Walk was first established in 1955 by the National Down Syndrome Society and the Wiregrass Area had its first in 2008. It is a fun, wonderful, heart-warming event in which thousands of people from coast to coast and around the world participate each year.

You can make a difference in the lives of thousands of families. Your participation in the Wiregrass Area Buddy Walk helps the F.R.I.E.N.D.S. organization (Families Reaching, Influencing, Educating and Networking for Down Syndrome) provide information and support to families in the Wiregrass Area. You can visit their website at www.downsyndromefriends.org

Organize a team from your workplace, school or community and support people with Down syndrome. Whether you have Down syndrome, know someone who does or just want to show your support, come and join the Wiregrass Area Buddy Walk.

For more information on how you can get involved or form a team, email WiregrassAreaBuddyWalk@yahoo.com or call Alicia @ 726.2075.

The Buddy Walk was developed by the National Down Syndrome Society in 1995 to bring together a wide range of concerned individuals to reach out to friends, family and co-workers to promote acceptance and inclusion for people with Down syndrome and to raise money for local and national programs and services. Each Buddy Walk is usually a one-mile walk and is surrounded by a day full of family friendly games, inflatables and fun music.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. is the local DS support group that the Wiregrass Area Buddy Walk raises money for. F.R.I.E.N.D.S. provides services to individuals with DS and their families by (1) providing up-to-date materials and handouts to doctors, hospitals, clinics, libraries, schools and new families, (2) offering opportunities for socialization and education, (3) promoting community recognition of the inherent dignity of all people with developmental disabilities. 90% of all monies raised stay in the Wiregrass. The remaining 10% goes to the National Down Syndrome Society to assist with National Advocacy programs and such.

Whether you have Down syndrome, have a friend or family member with Down syndrome or have just heard about our awesome Wiregrass Area Down syndrome BUDDIES….I encourage you to attend our walk. I assure you that you will leave a changed person. You will feel love at the event like no other. You will experience seeing true JOY in the lives of people that have overcome so many obstacles to get where they are today. And you will be blessed by attending.
