In Oscar's words, "Weather often grabs you and demands you pay attention. It could be life-threatening (tornadoes, hurricanes or blizzards); it might cost you money (floods, drought, extreme cold or heat); or the weather may alter your plans (showers or gusty winds).
"Media reports that describe weather events as weird or crazy show a lack of understanding how weather works. Any type of weather that occurs now has happened before - whether it was 2,200 or 20,000 years ago. Unfortunately, our written history of weather is too brief to explain fully how weather cycles - ranging from weeks to thousands of years - produce particular patterns of weather.
"My weather forecasts draw from several resources:
1) Computer model guidance attempts to predict the future state of the atmosphere. These programs are a great tool but suffer limitations, such as lack of actual oceanic and atmospheric data; 2) Analysis of global weather patterns (known as teleconnections) that eventually affect weather in our area: and 3) Weather cycles (such as El Nino) that usually mean above average rainfall in the winter season.
“So next time our weather seems to be uneventful, just remember the only constant in weather is that it will change, but when? How much, and for how long? Stay tuned."
Oscar's background includes a degree from Auburn University, post degree work at Mississippi State and Troy State Universities, along with three decades of formal meteorological studies and work as a meteorologist as recognized by the American Meteorological Society.
