Tanner Rallies Past Luverne for Berth in 2A Championship Game

The Luverne Boys Basketball Team had a chance to shock the world on Tuesday afternoon. Tanner had other ideas.

The Rattlers rallied late in the fourth quarter to avoid an upset from the Tigers, beating Luverne 51-50. With the win, Tanner advanced to Friday's Class 2A State Championship Game to face LaFayette.

Luverne led for most of the second half, only to watch the margin shrink as the game wound down. The Tigers missed eight consecutive free throws at one point in the fourth quarter, and the Rattlers took advantage, taking a 50-48 lead.

The Tigers weren't done, tying the game at 50 on a lay-up by DeAnthony Rutledge. But, Luverne left Tanner too much time, and Rattlers guard Justin Smith was fouled in the final seconds.

Smith made one of two free throws, and the Tigers were unable to inbound the ball, allowing Tanner to escape with a one-point victory. Smith led Tanner with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Rutledge had 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead Luverne. The Tigers ends the year with a 21-10 record.
