The Holmes County Boys Basketball Team has advanced to the Class 1A State Championship Game. The Blue Devils beat Hawthorne 51-48 in the 1A semifinals on Tuesday in Lakeland.
With the win, Holmes County advances to face West Gadsden for the State Title. The Jaguars beat Union County 76-51 in Tuesday's other semifinal game.
Chris Walker scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Blue Devils. Jacky Miles added 12 points and 10 boards for Holmes County.
Holmes County dominated the glass, outrebounding Hawthorne 46-32. The Blue Devils defense also came up big, limiting Hawthorne to 31 percent shooting for the game.
The Blue Devils jumped on Hawthorne early, leading 11-4 after the first quarter. Holmes County took a nine-point lead into the locker room, but watched Hawthorne cut the lead to two points entering the final period.
Holmes County hung on, outscoring Hawthorne 17-16 in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Edward Porter led Hawthorne with 16 points.
The Blue Devils (19-8) will take on the West Gadsden Panthers (25-8) Wednesday at 3:35 CST for the 1A state title.
