MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Sophomore catcher Smartt slugged a single, double and grand-slam home run to drive in six runs Thursday as Charles Henderson High School beat Brooks 7-2 in game two of the 2013 Class 5A Baseball Championship Series at Riverwalk Stadium.
The victory gave the Trojans (40-3) a sweep and the school’s first state baseball championship since 2004.
Smartt plated two runs with his double to left field in the first inning, then followed up with his bases-loaded homer some 380 feet sailing the blast over the left-field wall.
Winning pitcher Tripp Blackmon, a senior hurler, pitched a five-hitter to get the win. Blackmon (9-0) struck out two. He also had two hits with a double and single. John Johnson also had two hits for Coach Derek Irons’ Trojans.
Brooks (46-11), coached by Todd Nelms, got a strong pitching performance from junior Ryan Masonia (9-5), who overcame the six runs early to limit the Trojans to just one run the rest of the way. He gave up nine hits and struck out nine.
Catcher Austin Broadfoot had two hits Devan Henson had a hit and RBI to pace the Lions.
The Class 5A and 6A Championship Series get underway at Paterson Field Friday at 4 and 7 p.m. while the 2A and 3A Series close out at Riverwalk Stadium beginning at 10 a.m., and 4 p.m., respectively.
