The Brantley Bulldogs watched a significant lead slip away in the fourth quarter against Ragland on Tuesday night. Bulldogs junior guard Wesley Person made sure his team wouldn't fade completely.
Person hit a free throw in the final minute of regulation to force overtime and nailed two more from the charity stripe with less than three seconds to play in OT, lifting the Bulldogs to a 49-47 win over the Purple Devils.
With the victory, Brantley advanced to Friday's Class 1A State Championship Game against the winner of St. Jude and Marion County. The Purple Devils end the year with a 28-7 record.
Brantley appeared well on it's way to the title game until a late game surge from Ragland. The Purple Devils erased a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter and led by one until Person hit one of two free throws to send the game to overtime.
In the extra period, Person carried the Bulldogs, converting a three-point play and hitting four free throws in the final two minutes. Person finished with 25 points, including seven in the extra period.
Jimmy Brock led Ragland with 15 points and 10 rebounds, before fouling out. His driving lay-up briefly gave Ragland the lead in the final minute of regulation before Person's free throw kept the Bulldogs alive.
Brantley led 7-0 after the first quarter and 20-9 at halftime. However, the Purple Devils got hot after the break, scoring 29 points to get the game to overtime.
