TROY, Ala. – Troy baseball head coach Bobby Pierce announced the addition of four players to the Trojans 2012 recruiting class on Monday. Shortstop Garrett Pitts, outfielder David Hall, right-handed pitcher Austin Sullivan and catcher Justin Hancock will join the Trojans for the 2013 season.

The four spring signees join seven players from the early signing period to comprise the 2012 Troy signing class.

“Each of these players were identified and targeted by our coaching staff in the fall and their recruitment carried over into the spring,” Pierce said. “We believe each of them will fill immediate needs in our program next year and will complete a talented and deep recruiting class for 2012.”

Pitts joins the Trojans following a two-year career at Central Alabama Community College after beginning his collegiate career at Mississippi State. Pitts hit .364 with 15 doubles, two triples, 35 RBIs and posted a .459 on-base percentage from the lead-off spot in the lineup for a Trojan team that won 42 games. Pitts was teammates with current Troy Trojan Peyton Fuller at Fairhope High School.

“Garrett is a great fit into our program. He is a highly motivated player that has outstanding offensive and defensive ability,” Pierce said. “We’ve had excellent shortstop play in Troy for many years and we expect him to continue that fine tradition. I am excited about his future as a Trojan and look forward to his competitiveness on the field.”

Hall put up gaudy numbers this past season at Indian River State College in his hometown of Fort Pierce, Fla., as he batted at a .373 clip with 10 doubles, three triples, 11 home runs, 45 RBIs while posting a .444 on-base percentage. A high school teammate of current Trojan Shane McCain, Hall helped lead Indian River to the Florida State Tournament.

“We have followed David since his senior year in high school and are pleased that we have a chance to add him to our program,” Pierce said. “He is one of the most talented hitters in the state of Florida and we expect him to be a run-producer in the middle of the lineup for the Trojans. He has power potential as well. David will be a welcome addition to our offensive lineup.”

Sullivan makes his way to Troy following two seasons at Northwest Florida State College; two of his teammates, Matthew Howard and Trae Santos, signed with the Trojans back in November. Sullivan began his collegiate career as a catcher at Ole Miss, but moved to the mound as a sophomore at Northwest Florida and was sensational. The native of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., posted a 2-1 record with one save and a 2.05 ERA over 30.1 innings of work. Sullivan struck out 45, walked just 12 and held opponents to a .217 batting average; he had a 3.8 K/BB ratio while averaging 13.4 strikeouts per nine innings.

“Austin has a tremendous future on the mound,” Pierce said. “As a former D-I catcher, he obviously possesses quality arm strength. This spring he advanced quickly with opportunity as a pitcher and concluded his sophomore season with a great start in the Florida State Tournament. He will make an impact either in our starting rotation or at the back end of our bullpen.”

Hancock joins Pitts and November signee Tanner Hicks on the Troy squad from Central Alabama Community College. The Enterprise, Ala., native has a solid arm behind the plate and will help bolster the depth of Troy’s catching position. Hancock posted high caught stealing rates in both seasons at Central Alabama, including over 50 percent as a sophomore. He hit .250 with a pair of home runs and 11 RBIs last season.

“We have seen Justin play for several years now being from Enterprise,” Pierce said. “We have always been aware of his throwing and catching ability and feel confident he will bring quality depth to a position where depth is critical. He is an outstanding student with a high level and competitiveness and determination who fits our program very well.”
