Providence Christian star Ryan Benton has been close so many times. This year, Benton finally broke through.
Benton won the Class 1A-2A Individual State Golf Championship, shooting a +2, 74 during Tuesday's final round at Opelika's Grand National Golf Club. He finished with a two-day total of 143, good for -1 under par.
Benton beat Shoals Christian standout Ben Wood by five strokes for the individual title. He finished second to Shoals Christian star Michael Peter in last year's 1A-2A Championship.
Fellow Providence Christian stars Jonathan Cheshire and Beau Scott finished fifth and seventh respectively. Houston Academy's Chase Feagin finished fourth.
Providence Christian also captured the 1A-2A Team State Championship, beating Shoals Christian by 16 strokes.
Andalusia's Josh Atkinson finished ninth in the 4A Championship.
