The Dothan Post 12 Baseball Team knows the road to this year's state championship will run through Tuscaloosa Post 34. That's been the case for the past decade.
So, Post 12 struck the first blow in the annual summer rivalry, knocking off Post 34 5-3 at the Memorial Tournament in Tuscaloosa. Post 12 beat the Mississippi All Stars earlier in the day 14-0.
Post 12 used solid pitching and timely hitting to knock off it's biggest rival. Lake Genard (Wicksburg) threw four solid innings to start the game, allowing just two runs.
After Justin Burke (Seminole County) allowed a run in his only inning of work, Kevin Husum entered and slammed the door. The Gulf Coast closer threw two scoreless innings, striking out four.
Post 12 broke a three-all tie in the sixth inning with two runs. Quinton Snellgrove (Providence Christian) and Cody Trusty (Cottonwood) each doubled, and Jalin Lawson (Charles Henderson) followed with a single to give Post 12 a 5-3 advantage.
Post 12 will play two games on Sunday, facing Centerville Post 128 at 3 p.m., followed by another game with Post 34 at 5:30,
