North All-Stars Sweep Soccer Double Header

The North girls rolled to a victory in the opener and the North boys scored an early first half goal en route to a win and a sweep of the All-Star Sports Week soccer doubleheader Tuesday night at the new Folmar YMCA Soccer Stadium in Montgomery

Girls: North 6, South 0

Briarwood Christian’s Sara Smeltzer and Simone Charley scored three goals apiece to lead the North All-Stars to a 6-0 win over the South in the opening match. The North now leads the all-time series 9-2-1.

Smeltzer earned Most Valuable Player honors and assisted on the game’s first goal, feeding Charley’s first goal in the 18th minute. South goal keeper Johannah Scott of Spanish Fort was named the South MVP with eight saves.

Simone’s second goal opened the second half and gave the North a 2-0 lead in the 47th minute. Vestavia’s Juliana Ross assisted on the goal.

Smeltzer added an unassisted goal in the 52nd minute and her second in the 63rd minute on an assist by Jacksonville’s Sharon Osterbind for a 4-0 North lead.

Charley scored an unassisted goal in the 68th minute and Smeltzer added the final goal of the night in the 71st minute off a feed from Randolph’s Emily Knowling.

Cate Eden started in goal for the North, recording two saves on the evening.

The North squad held a 25-2 advantage in overall shots and 15-2 in shots on goal while improving its lead in the series to 9-3-1.

Boys: North 3, South 1

The North Stars scored an early first half goal and added two second half goals en route to a 3-1 win over the South in the night's second match.

Athens’ Christopher Gregory scored two goals to claim Most Valuable Player honors for the North. Levi Ehmka scored a goal to take home South MVP laurels.

Both Gregory goals came off corner kicks, his first one in the 6th minute off a corner from Hewitt-Trussville’s Luke Reeves. Gregory's second goal off corner kick gave the North a 2-0 leas in the 46th minute.

Vestavia’s Sam Irvin made it 3-0 in the 72nd minute on a shot from the right side of the penalty box. Ehmka’s goal scored the South goal in the 76th minute to cut the North lead to 3-1.

Marvin Castellanos had two saves in goal for the North. Will Carpenter had three saves and Blake Chappell had four for the South.

The North held a 17-6 advantage in shots and a 10-3 in shots on goal while improving its lead in the series to 7-4-1.
