Ashford Hires Mitch Sellers as Head Football Coach

In late March, Chip Harris announced he was leaving Ashford to return home and become the head football coach at Chipley, where he graduated in 1990.

Mitch Sellers can relate, except he never left home. Sellers is a 1981 graduate of Ashford High School, and on Monday, he officially replaced Harris as the Yellow Jackets Head Coach.

Sellers was recommended for the head coaching job on Friday, approved by the Houston County School Board on Monday, and already on the field when the team opened spring practice on Monday afternoon.

Former Ashford coach Lester Bratcher hired Sellers in 2004 as a middle school coach, and brought him on as a varsity assistant the following year. Sellers coached the Ashford JV Team in 2009 and 2010, while also working under Harris as an assistant.

Although things have been chaotic since Harris' abrupt resignation in April, Sellers says he's happy to be the head coach in his hometown. Now, he's ready to get to work.

"We're doing a lot of learning, a lot of teaching new systems, and so we're excited," Sellers said. "I think the kids are excited and we're looking for big things, and hopefully have a lot of success."

Sellers is currently wearing two coaching hats as he continues to lead the Yellow Jackets Softball Team. Ashford has advanced to the regional round, and will play Saraland Friday morning at 8 a.m.
