UAB Rallies Late to Beat Troy 6-4

TROY, Ala. – UAB scored six-unanswered runs to rally past Troy 6-4 Tuesday night at Young Memorial Field in the final non-conference game of the season for both squads.

The Blazers scored four runs in the sixth to tie the game and then plated two in the seventh to claim the lead after the Trojans (37-15) scored all four of their runs in the third inning.

Tyler Vaughn, who finished 2-for-5, reached on a one-out single and took second on a throwing error on the play. Following a walk to Logan Piece, Danny Collins smashed his 23rd double of the season to center field to put Troy up 1-0.

UAB chose to intentionally walk Trae Santos to face Josh McDorman and the Troy center fielder proved that to be the wrong call as he drove in two runs with a double to left. Matthew Howard capped the scoring with a sac fly to the warning track in center.

True freshman Levi Tate started on the mound for the Trojans and held UAB (20-33) scoreless over the first five innings of the game before running into trouble in the sixth. He walked two of first three batters in the inning and turned the ball over to the bullpen.

John Frost put UAB on the board with a two-run double and with two outs in the inning Jeff Schalk followed with a run-scoring double. Following an intentional walk, Jacob German tied the game with a single to left.

Pinch hitter Griffin Gum led off the seventh with a single to right and moved into scoring position on a sac bunt. Ryan Prinzing plated the game-winner with a single down the line in left and Frost added an insurance run with his second double of the game.

William Teal (1-1) took the loss for the Trojans after he allowed both runs in the seventh. James Naile (6-5) picked up the win for UAB and Cory Eller earned his first save.

Troy wraps up the regular season in Mobile, Ala., with the Sun Belt regular season championship on the line at South Alabama. The Trojans enter the series just a game behind the Jaguars for first place in the standings and can win a share of the title with two victories and the outright championship with a sweep. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
