TROY, Ala. – Troy University senior Will Scott is one of 30 players on the initial Groza Award Watch List released Wednesday by Palm Beach County Sports Commission. The Groza Award is presented annually to the nation’s top place kicker.
Scott, a native of Lucedale, Miss., was 17-for-21 last season for the Trojans and connected on his final 12 attempts of the season to establish a new Troy record for consecutive makes. Scott also set a new Troy record as he booted a 52-yard field goal at Florida Atlantic to surpass Ted Clem’s 50-yard field goal to win the 1984 national championship as the longest in school history.
Scott tied a Troy single-game record with four field goals against Arkansas State and kicked a game-winning 42-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining against FIU. Scott, who was 4-of-5 from 40-49 yards out, finished the 2012 season with the third most made field goals and third-best field goal percentage in school history.
Accomplishments are tabulated throughout the season and the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award will announce its 20 semifinalists on Nov. 4. From this list, a panel of more than 300 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches, sports information directors, media members and former winners selects the top three finalists for the award by Nov. 25. That same group then selects the national winner, who will be announced Dec. 12 during the Home Depot College Football Awards, broadcast live from Orlando, Fla.
The 22nd Annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, presented by the Orange Bowl Committee, recognizes the three finalists during an early week celebration in Palm Beach County, culminating with a gala awards banquet on Dec. 10, prior to joining ESPN in Orlando.
The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
