NEW ORLEANS – Troy junior Shane McCain was named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week for his work against Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
McCain, a native of Fort Pierce, Fla., held Southeastern Louisiana to just three hits and one run over seven innings of work. The southpaw struck out a career-high nine batters in the game and did not issue a walk. McCain needed just 90 pitches to pick up his third victory and second quality start of the season.
McCain and reliever Matthew Howard combined to retire the final 16 Southeastern Louisiana batters in the game. McCain struck out multiple Lion batters in each of the first three innings and in four total frames; SLU came into the game with a top 10 RPI.
This is the first Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week honor for a Trojan this year after Danny Collins was twice named the Sun Belt Player of the Week.
Troy (11-3) will put its five-game win streak on the line Tuesday night when it plays host to in-state rival UAB. First pitch between the Trojans and Blazers is set for 6 p.m. at Riddle-Pace Field.
Senior right-hander Ryan Brady will make his second start of the season on the mound for the Trojans. Troy head coach Bobby Pierce enters Tuesday’s non-conference battle with UAB 899 career victories over his 25-year career.
The Blazers (7-9) come to Troy after dropping a weekend series at Sun Belt foe Arkansas State; UAB swept a two-game mid-week series from St. Joseph’s last week.
The game will be broadcast live on the Troy IMG Sports Network with local coverage on 94.7 FM and free worldwide coverage online at TroyTrojans.com. Live stats and live video via Trojan All-Access will also be available at TroyTrojans.com.
