INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Lizzie Clough, a two-sport student-athlete at Troy, has been nominated for the 2013 NCAA Woman of the Year award by the Sun Belt Conference.
The Woman of the Year award honors graduating female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership.
Clough, a volleyball and track and field student-athlete, graduated in December 2012 with a degree in sport and fitness management. After finishing her undergraduate work with a 3.8 GPA, Clough will begin work on her Master of Business Administration in the fall.
The Mobile, Ala., native was a three-year letterwinner for the Troy volleyball team and the Troy track and field team, working back from two knee injuries during her collegiate career.
Clough was the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Champion in the javelin throw and qualified for the NCAA Track and Field East Regional three times while also being named an Academic All-American twice.
On the volleyball court, she amassed 616 career digs and 49 career service aces before moving to the bench as a student assistant coach last season. As a part of the coaching staff, Clough helped the Trojans to a 21-12 season and a program-best second place finish in the Sun Belt in 2012.
Clough will continue to serve with the volleyball program as a graduate assistant coach in 2013 as she pursues her MBA.
A total of 455 female student-athletes were nominated for the 2013 NCAA Woman of the Year award. Each conference then selects a woman from the nominees to represent the conference. Those 140 names are then sent to the Woman of the Year selection committee, which chooses the top 10 honorees in each division.
From among those 30 candidates, the selection committee determines the top three in each division and announces the top nine finalists in September. The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics will then vote from among the finalists to determine the 2013 NCAA Woman of the Year.
The top 30 honorees will be honored, and the 2013 NCAA Woman of the Year winner will be announced, at the annual ceremony in Indianapolis on Oct. 20.
