Troy Women, Beverly-Kelley Roll Past Georgia State

TROY, Ala. – The Troy women’s basketball team won its fourth straight at home in big-time fashion, cruising past Georgia State 111-90 on Saturday night at Trojan Arena. The Trojans scored 100 points for the fourth time this season and for the first time in a Sun Belt game in program history.

Ashley Beverly-Kelley flirted with a triple-double as she had 32 points (12-16 FG), 13 assists and eight rebounds. Three other Trojans scored in double figures, including Joanna Harden who had 22 points for her ninth straight with 20-plus.

Troy (9-14, 5-7) came up one shy of a school record with 15 made 3-pointers (15-of-32) with 10 of them coming in the first half as Troy led nearly the entire game. Troy shot 50 percent (20-of-40) from the field and 56 percent (10-of-18) from deep in the first half as they led 59-42 at the break.

Georgia State (10-13, 6-5) committed 27 turnovers and Troy scored 33 points off of them to win their fifth in the last seven games. The Panthers committed 17 of their turnovers in the opening half.

Troy’s post players picked up eight of the Trojans’ nine steals, including three from Dominique Ross. Ronita Garrett scored 15 points inside for Troy while Brianna Lancaster had 14 points.

The 3-point shooting was key for Troy with Beverly-Kelley going a perfect 5-of-5 from deep. Beverly-Kelley did not score in Troy’s first game at Georgia State, a game the Panthers won 85-77. Harden hit four 3-pointers and Garrett hit three for the Trojans.

“It’s a great night in Trojan Arena with the men’s win and ours,” Troy head coach Chanda Rigby said. “I’m especially excited about this win because of the amount of improvement we’ve made since the first time we played them.”

The game followed the Troy men’s basketball win over Georgia State. The Troy men won 85-81 over a Georgia State team that had won 14 straight games in a game that was televised on ESPN2.

The Trojans return to the floor on Wednesday when they travel to take on UL Lafayette. The Ragin’ Cajuns defeated Sun Belt leader Arkansas State on Saturday night.
