CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – With the game tied at 56 in the final seconds, Antoine Myers hit an incredible layup and drew a foul to propel the Trojans (3-2) to a 59-56 victory over Southeast Missouri (3-3) on Tuesday night. The Trojans had squandered a 10-point second half lead, but remained composed to get the win. Troy won two of three games in Chattanooga, as part of the 2012 CBE Hall of Fame Classic.
“This was not only a big win but an important win, because it was so close,” said head coach Don Maestri. “We had to do things right in the last few minutes. That’s something you can’t simulate on the practice court at home.”
Myers drove to the basket with the shot clock running down in the final seconds and hit a twisting layup after being fouled by Tyler Stone. Myers would hit the free throw to give the Trojans the win. Myers would finish with a team-high 14 points to go with two rebounds and two assists.
Emil Jones filled up the stat sheet, scoring 13 points, grabbing nine rebounds, dishing out three assists and adding three steals. Hunter Williams finished with 10 points and five boards, while R.J. Scott scored six points off the bench.
The Trojans shot 38.3 percent from the field (23-of-60) and just 26.3 percent (5-of-19) from beyond the arc, but came out on top. Troy was outrebounded 41-36.
The Redhawks cut away at the lead early in the second half, eventually tying the score at 45 with 8:50 to play. The Trojans responded well, going on an 11-2 run, sparked by four points from Jones and a huge 3-pointer by Hunter Williams.
Chattanooga took a 7-4 lead in the opening minutes, but a 17-2 run by Troy, capped off by a pair of 3-pointers by R.J. Scott, put the Trojans on top, 21-9, midway through the half. The Trojans distributed the ball well throughout the half, with six players scoring at least four points.
The Trojans are off until Sunday, when they return home to take on Alabama State at 2 p.m. in their first game in Trojan Arena since taking down Mississippi State. The game kicks off a stretch of four games in eight days for Troy, with UAB coming to town on November 28 and Sun Belt play beginning on November 30th at UALR. Saturday December 1st marks the first home conference game, with Western Kentucky coming to Troy.
