TROY, Ala. – Troy hit three home runs and scored seven runs over the final three innings to defeat No. 24 Southern Miss 8-3 Sunday and win the non-conference series.
Freshman Peyton Fuller capped a memorable weekend when he put the Trojans (8-3) in front 4-2 with a two-run home run to left field in the sixth inning and finished 2-for-4 in the game. Fuller made his first career start yesterday and belted out three hits including a pair of doubles in that game.
Fuller’s blast came two batters after Jake Harrell took the first pitch of the inning over the wall in right-center field to tie the game at 2-2. A rattled Mason Robbins then walked Josh McDorman on five pitches to set up Fuller’s first career home run.
Danny Collins put a bow on a monster week with a two-run homer – his fourth of the season – following a leadoff walk to Logan Pierce in the seventh. The junior slugger hit three home runs over Troy’s five games this week and two in the series against Southern Miss; he finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the game Sunday.
Tanner Hicks and Nate Hill combined to keep the Southern Miss batters out of rhythm all game. Hicks (2-0) earned the victory after he struck out six, allowed just two runs on four hits over six innings. Hill picked up his first save of the season as he allowed a run over the final three innings.
Troy jumped in front on an RBI single by Trae Santos with runners on the corners and two outs in the third.
Southern Miss (6-5) answered in the top of the fourth on a fielder’s choice ground out by Austin Roussell following a pair of singles and a sac bunt. The Golden Eagles briefly took a 2-1 lead on a two-out home run by Isaac Rodriguez; Hicks had struck out the first two batters of the inning and had Rodriguez in a 1-2 hole before the homer.
The Trojans added some important insurance runs in the eighth thanks to a key Golden Eagle error. Brandon Brown led off the inning with a single to left and Clay Holcomb reached on a fielder’s choice on a throwing error trying to nab Brown at second. Tyler Vaughn moved the runners up a base with a sac bunt and Brown scored on a wild pitch before Collins beat out an infield single to score Holcomb and make it an 8-3 margin.
Mason Robbins (1-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season as he gave up four runs on six hits over five innings. The Southern Miss starter walked four and struck out three before turning the ball over to Jay Myrick, who allowed four runs – two earned – on a pair of hits in three innings.
The Trojans will travel to Birmingham, Ala., for a tough mid-week contest at Samford. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
