Troy Softball Team Loses Final Two Games at Jeannine McHaney Memorial

LUBBOCK, Texas – Troy wrapped up play at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic on Monday, falling to UT-Arlington 6-5 in the day’s first game; Texas Tech defeated the Trojans 15-0 in the final game of the tournament.

UT-Arlington (12-8) rallied to score twice in the top of the fifth, as Taylor Zink’s RBI single score the go-ahead run to allow the Mavericks to retake a 6-5 lead. Pinch hitter Lauren Siple’s double to the left field wall tied the game at 5-5 earlier in the frame.

Caitlin Ortiz’s RBI double to center broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Ebony Wright from first base to give Troy a 5-4 lead.

The Mavericks took an early 4-0 lead in the second inning behind a two-run home run from Rachel Forshaw, a solo shot from Rebecca Stokes and a RBI double by Taylor Zink.

Troy (11-15) took advantage of three UT-Arlington errors in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 4-4. With bases loaded, Kacie McAllister lined a hard-hit ball back to the circle that was knockdown by Mavericks pitcher Callie Collins, but the throw got past first baseman Rebecca Stokes to allow two runs to score.

Wright and Ortiz both recorded 2-for-3 days at the plate in the loss. Wright doubled in the third and scored twice, while Ortiz doubled and added a single in the bottom of the seventh.

Rachel Rigney took up the loss, allowing 11 hits and six runs in 5.1 innings of work. The freshman struck out three and issued just one walk. After giving up four runs in the second inning, Rigney (6-6) slowed the Mavericks’ bats down until the top of the sixth when UT-Arlington plated the go-ahead run.

In her first appearance of the tournament, Jaycee Affeldt kept the Trojans in the game, keeping UT-Arlington off the scoreboard for the 1.2 innings of her relief appearance. The sophomore worked out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth by getting some defensive help from sophomore left fielder Chelsea Eytel’s diving catch that kept the Mavericks from doing any further damage.

In the day’s second game, Troy fell 15-0 in five innings to Texas Tech (19-8). The Red Raiders pounded out 16 hits and scored 14 runs in the game’s first three innings off three different Troy pitchers.

Red Raiders left fielder Shelby Johnson and designated player Adriana Perez both recorded three base hits and combined to drive in six of Texas Tech’s 15 runs. Mikey Kenney belted a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the first; the second straight game against the Trojans in which the center fielder led off with a deep blast.

Kacie McAllister extended her hitting streak to 10 games, with a single to center in the second inning against the Red Raiders. Caitlin Ortiz and Madison Rich also recorded base hits in the loss.

Troy looks to snap its five-game losing skid and continues its 12-game road trip by facing future Sun Belt Conference foe Texas State in San Marcos, Texas, on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m.
