TROY, Ala. – Troy University softball has added another top recruit for next season, signing local product Kate Benton from Shelton State.
Benton, a native of Dothan, Ala., spent the last two seasons at Shelton State. There, Benton thrived as one of the best hitters in the country, finishing the season with 109 hits, the most in the nation. She also finished fifth in the country with 60 stolen bases and seventh with a .505 batting average.
Benton joins the Trojans having accomplished quite a lot in her two years at the junior college level. She was named the NJCAA Player of the Week once, as the best athlete in all JUCO sports that week, and is currently a finalist for All-America honors.
Benton was named the MVP of the Alabama Community College Conference and also earned NJCAA All-Region XXII First Team honors, as well as first team ACCC All-Northern Division honors. Benton was also selected to the all-tournament team at the NJCAA Region XXII Tournament.
“I am looking forward to transferring to Troy because it’s always been a dream of mine to play at a program like Troy,” said Benton. “I’m excited to extend my education and softball career at the next level and to continue to better myself as a student and a player.”
