Troy Holds First Spring Practice in Full Pads

TROY, Ala. – The Troy football team took to the turf at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Tuesday to participate in its third spring practice, and first full-pad workout.

Troy opened its spring schedule last Thursday in just shorts, and continued with that on Saturday in a morning workout. Coaches made the decision to go ahead with full pads in just the third spring workout on Tuesday to allow for younger players to get the full tackling experience.

“We let them go ahead and come out here and hit each other,” head coach Larry Blakeney said. “The only thing you worry about in working with full pads is injury in 11-on-11 and putting them at risk. So we divided each team drill up into two stages and let them full-out tackle each other one half, and thud the other.

“They needed to get some good tackling drills in and we also let them go through the Trojan drills, a one-on-one experience where players go head-to-head.”

Quarterback Corey Robinson said the change to full pads doesn’t affect the offense very much, but it does allow for some players to go all-out and show their aggressiveness.

“Some of these guys have some anger issues built up, so they can hit around a little bit and get it going.”

With the conclusion of Tuesday’s workout, the Trojans have 10 scheduled practices remaining before the annual T-Day Spring Game on April 20. The practice schedule will continue with 3:30 p.m. workouts on Tuesday and Thursday, and 11 a.m. drills on Saturday mornings.
