Troy Cruises Past FIU 14-3 to Run Home Win Streak to 15 Games

TROY, Ala. – Troy belted five doubles and Josh McDorman continued his torrid weekend as the Trojans beat FIU 14-3 on Saturday at Riddle-Pace Field to extend the NCAA’s longest home win streak to 15 games.

McDorman went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two stolen bases on Saturday after going 4-for-4 with three RBIs in the opener on Friday. Saturday’s victory clinches the Sun Belt Conference series in Troy’s favor; the Trojans have won 14 of their last 16 Sun Belt series at home and have won nine straight conference games at home.

Shane McCain struck out a career-high 11 batters and held the Panthers to just three runs on four hits over seven innings to improve to 8-1 on the season.

The win was the 387th of Bobby Pierce’s career at Troy, which moves him past John Mayotte for the second most in school history. Legendary head coach Chase Riddle holds the all-time record with 434 wins at Troy.

Troy (34-12, 15-8) stepped on the gas early with three runs in the first and delivered the knockout blow with a seven-run eighth inning.

Logan Pierce and Trae Santos both had two doubles for the Trojans and McDorman added the other. Pierce drove in three runs, while Tyler Vaughn, Garrett Pitts and Santos each plated a pair.

Troy, who ranks third in the country in scoring, has reached double-digit runs 19 times this season. The Trojans have scored at least eight runs in eight of their last nine home games.

Danny Collins, who finished 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, put the Trojans on the board in the first with a ground out after a walk by Vaughn and double by Pierce. Santos followed with an RBI double and McDorman with a run-scoring single.

FIU (23-23, 11-12) got on the board in the second thanks to a wild pitch with the bases loaded, but the Trojans answered right back in the home half of the frame with an RBI single by Vaughn.

The Trojans had runners on the corners with one out in the third and McDoman stole home to stretch the Troy lead out to 5-1. Oscar Aguirre closed gap to two, 5-3, with a two-run homer in the fourth.

After three scoreless frames, the Trojans got the bats going again in the seventh when Pitts scored Santos with a single to left.

The Trojans sent 11 batters to the plate in the eighth inning. Santos opened the scoring with a double off the wall in right and McDorman followed with a sac fly. After a Pitts RBI single and a walk to Vaughn with the bases loaded, Pierce hit a three-run double to straightaway center field to close out the scoring.

Mike Franco (5-3) suffered the loss for FIU after he allowed five runs on eight hits in six innings; he struck out three and walked five. Aguirre was the lone Panther with multiple hits as he finished 2-for-4.

The Trojans will go for the sweep of the Panthers on Sunday at noon.
