TROY, Ala. – Troy scored 10 runs over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to break open a scoreless game en route to a 10-5 victory over UALR on Sunday at Riddle-Pace Field. The victory was the 12th straight for Troy at home – the third longest streak in the country – and completed the three-game Sun Belt Conference sweep.
The victory moves Troy (29-11, 11-7 Sun Belt) into a tie for second place in the Sun Belt with Florida Atlantic and Western Kentucky, just a game back of South Alabama. Troy travels to Florida Atlantic next weekend for a three-game set.
Ryan Sorce (5-0), who was making his first conference start of the year, retired 12 straight UALR batters at one point in the game and allowed just one run on three hits over seven innings to pick up the victory. Sorce struck out seven batters and walked just one as he lowered his ERA to 2.41 for the year.
Josh McDorman opened the fifth inning with a single up the middle and Ali Knowles followed with a double to right. Following a strikeout, Jake Harrell was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Tyler Vaughn. The junior shortstop doubled down the line in right field to plate two and put Troy in front.
Logan Pierce extended his NCAA-leading streak of reaching base safely to 45 games with an RBI single up the middle to score Vaughn after a passed ball allowed Harrell to score.
McDorman finished the week batting at a .500 clip (8-for-16) with six runs scored, two home runs and nine RBIs in Troy five games. He gave Troy a 5-0 lead with a sac fly in the sixth after Trae Santos doubled and Matthew Howard singled.
Vaughn, McDorman, Harrell, Santos and Danny Collins all had two hits in the game for Troy, who outhit UALR 28-18 for the weekend.
Collins, who belted seven doubles over Troy’s five games this week and four in the series, pushed Troy’s lead out to 7-0 with a two-run double in the seventh. Santos followed with a single back up the middle to score two more and McDorman capped the five-run frame with an RBI single to center.
Troy finished the weekend series against UALR with 11 doubles and belted 20 two-baggers during its five games this week.
UALR (18-20, 5-12) got a solo homer from Austin Pfeiffer in the sixth, a three-run home run from John Clark in the eighth and a solo shot from Bryson Thionnet in the ninth.
Travis McDonald (1-2) took the loss for UALR after he was charged with five runs – four earned – on seven hits in 5.1 innings; he struck out six and did not walk a batter.
Troy wraps up its six-game homestand on Tuesday against Samford; first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
