Troy Completes Sweep of FIU to Run Home Win Streak to 16 Games

TROY, Ala. – Troy ran its home win streak to 16 games as the Trojans completed a three-game Sun Belt Conference sweep of FIU with a 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field; the win streak is the longest in the country.

The Trojans (35-12, 16-8 Sun Belt) have now won 11 of their last 12 games and 22 of their last 27 games (four of the five losses were one-run games). Troy has swept three straight Sun Belt Conference opponents at home and has won 10 straight league games at Riddle-Pace Field.

Ryan Sorce improved to 6-0 on the season after holding the Panthers to one run on six hits over 5.1 innings of work; he struck out two and did not walk a batter. Thomas Austin picked up his fourth hold of the season after tossing two scoreless innings; he came out of the bullpen with two on and one out in the sixth and induced a double play to end the inning.

Nate Hill closed out the game for the Trojans with 1.2 innings for his fourth save of the season and second of the weekend.

Tyler Vaughn plated what would be the game-winning run with a single to center field in the fifth inning. Brandon Brown set the table for Vaughn with a two-out double to left.

Logan Pierce provided some insurance for the Trojans in the seventh with an RBI single to center after a walk to Ali Knowles to lead off the inning; Knowles drew seven walks in the series. Brown moved Knowles to second with a sac bunt and Vaughn drew a walk before Pierce’s 53rd RBI of the season.

The Sun Belt’s home run leader Trae Santos padded his lead in the category with a solo shot to lead off the second inning; it was the 14th homer and 60th RBI of the season for Santos.

Josh McDorman didn’t record a hit in the contest, but got on base twice and stole three bases. The senior also saved a run in the ninth when he faked a catch on a sure sac fly, FIU’s Mandy Alvarez fell for the fake and was forced to stay at third. McDorman finished the series batting .700 (7-for-10) with six RBIs and six stolen bases.

FIU (23-24, 11-13) scored its only run of the game in the third on a ground out by Julius Gaines after a triple by Roche Woodard. The Panthers had runners on the corners with nobody out in the ninth, but McDorman’s fake, a strikeout by Gaines and a grounder to short ended the game.

The Trojans step out of conference on Wednesday when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for a in-state showdown with Alabama.
