TROY, Ala. – The Troy softball team knocked off Evansville, 5-3, Sunday morning to wrap up play at the Troy Subway Invitational.
In bottom of the second, Troy used a five-run inning to jump out in front of Evansville. After a bases loaded walk and an Evansville error allowed Troy to jump out to a 2-0 lead, left fielder Kacie McAllister, who finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI, sent a line drive RBI single that deflected off Evansville pitcher Annie Moore and rolled into left field to allow Chandler Grffin to score.
The Trojans (4-5) added two more runs with a hard-hit RBI single by Hannah Renn and RBI groundout by Ebony Wright extended Troy’s lead to 5-0.
After the Purple Aces (0-5) added a run in the third, Evansville scratched two runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Troy lead down to 5-3. After Troy pitcher Rachel Rigney (3-1) walked in a run with the bases loaded, Aces first baseman Kendall Kautz sent a single to left to drive in run to cut the lead to just two runs, but Rigney would shut the door on Evansville by getting a ground out to end the inning.
Rigney picked up her third complete game win of the year, allowing five hits and three runs, with just one earned. The freshman picked up a career-high six strikeouts in the victory.
Troy travels to the Phyllis Rafter Memorial in Woodstock, Ga., for a three-day tournament starting on Friday, February 22. The Trojans face Akron on Friday at 10 a.m. before taking on Youngstown State at 3 p.m.
