CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Troy men’s basketball team (1-1) gets back to the court on Sunday when they travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., to play in the 2012 CBE Hall of Fame Classic. The Trojans will face Louisiana Tech on Sunday at 4:30 p.m., Chattanooga on Monday at 6 p.m., and Southeast Missouri at 3:30 on Tuesday.
The Trojans split their opening weekend, defeating Mississippi State, 56-53, on Friday night and falling to Texas A&M, 83-65, on Monday. Emil Jones broke a 53-53 tie with 1.6 seconds remaining against the Bulldogs with a mid-range jumper to secure the win. The Trojans rallied in the second half against the Aggies, but couldn’t get closer than seven.
Jones averaged 9.0 points per game and a team-high 5.5 rebounds per game. Newcomers Hunter Williams and Tevin Calhoun were strong in both games. Williams leads the team with 12.5 points per game, while Calhoun is second at 10.0 points per game. Troy has been very successful with the 3-ball this season, shooting 37.7 percent (23-of-61) as a team.
Troy will face Louisiana Tech (1-1) first, at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. The Bulldogs fell to Texas A&M, 71-59, and defeated UALR, 70-52. Cordarius Johnson and Raheem Appleby lead the team with 13.5 points per game. Kenneth Smith has been a force on the boards, averaging 7.5 rebounds per game. The Bulldogs have struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 23.3 percent from range.
Chattanooga (1-1) fell to Kansas in its opening game of the Classic, 69-55. The Mocs have a strong inside presence, and have outrebounded their opponents by an average of 42.0-34.5 this season. Z. Mason and Farad Cobb lead the team with 14.5 points per game.
Southeast Missouri (2-1) also fell to Kansas in its opening game of the Classic, 74-55. The Redhawks rebounded by defeating Lyon College and McNeese State at home. Tyler Stone has been solid all season, averaging 17.0 points per game and shooting 53.8 percent from the floor. Nino Johnson has done his part as well, with 15.3 points, 11.0 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game, while shooting 70.4 percent from the field.
Troy has never faced Louisiana Tech or Chattanooga, and is 0-4 all-time against Southeast Missouri. The last meeting came on December 1, 1995, when the Trojans fell 109-91.
