Troy Baseball Comeback Falls Short vs. UT Arlington

TROY, Ala. – The Troy University baseball team battled back from an early deficit but fell 11-6 to UT Arlington on Friday at Riddle-Pace Field. The decision marks the sixth consecutive Friday loss for the Trojans.

Tyler Vaughn was 3-for-3 and Nick Masonia also turned in a three-hit night as Troy tried to free itself from a 9-1 hole.

Trailing by eight runs in the fifth inning, Clay Holcomb and Vaughn reached base to start the frame before David Hall doubled down the line in right field to plate both runners. Hall leads the team with 33 RBIs on the year. Jakob Nixon singled up the middle to score Hall and Masonia added an explanation point with a two-run home run to left field to make it a 9-6 game.

Troy (20-23, 7-11 SBC) had its chances but failed to score with the bases loaded in would fail to score with the bases loaded in both the third and sixth innings. The Trojans also grounded into a pair of double plays.

UT Arlington (19-23, 10-9) got on the board first with an RBI double from Ryan Bottger in the opening frame. The Mavericks would add another run in the third on a wild pitch. The floodgates opened in the middle innings as UTA scored four runs in the fourth and three in the fifth.

JM Twitcell homered off Troy starter Tanner Hicks to start the fourth. After a walk, single and hit batsman, Matt Shortall singled home two runs. Bottger pushed another run across with a single. In the fifth, Eric Tate hit a towering, two-run shot off Troy reliever Jesse Nelson and Derek Miller drove home a run with a base hit.

Hicks (2-7) took the loss on the mound pitching just four innings allowing six runs on eight hits. Justin Schnedler (2-4) picked up the wins for the Mavericks after tossing 1 1/3 innings in relief.

Troy scored its first run in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI single from Matthew Howard. The Trojans finished the game with 13 hits but left 11 men on base in the contest. UT Arlington added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth on a Darien McLemore home run.

Troy and UT Arlington will square off in game two on Saturday at 6 p.m. Reigning Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week, Shane McCain, is expected to make the start for the Trojans.
