Sun Belt commissioner expresses faith in 'Power-5'

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson says the 11-team league is prepared for the anticipated rising cost of remaining part of major college football.
Benson says he also has faith that leaders of the wealthiest conferences -- known as the "power five" -- recognize they still need the other five NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision conferences for scheduling purposes, and won't unduly diminish their ability to compete.
Benson says Sun Belt institutions support power five proposals to increase spending on student athletes to account for the full cost of attending college beyond just tuition. Benson says such changes will present financial challenges for smaller conferences, but stressed that Sun Belt schools "have invested too much not to be part of major college football in the future."
