TROY, Ala. – For 10 days, the Troy men’s basketball team will be facing off against some of the best competition Spain has to offer, as the Trojans head overseas for preseason training.
“Our players and coaches are very excited about the upcoming tour of Spain,” said head coach Phil Cunningham. “It should be a terrific trip from a cultural and athletic point of view.”
The team leaves the States on Thursday, August 1, with the beginning of the trip taking place in Barcelona. From there, the Trojans will travel to Gran Canaria to wrap up their slate of games against some of the top club teams in Spain before returning home.
The trip will serve as a solid foundation for the new regime in Troy, as the players and coaches continue to familiarize themselves with one another.
“I’m especially happy for the six seniors on the team who get to start their final year at Troy with an experience that they will remember for a lifetime,” Cunningham said. “From a basketball standpoint, the 10 days of practice allowed by the NCAA for a foreign tour has helped the transition from one coaching staff to another immensely.
“We had to play an extra “guarantee game” to fund this trip, but the benefits gained from the extra practices and games on the trip should pay off when practice starts in October. Everyone, from the players and managers to the coaching staff, will now have a much better idea of what we expect when we walk on the floor, and what we are trying to accomplish in every phase of a regular practice.”
The regular season begins in November, with the Trojans looking to reclaim the top spot in the Sun Belt Conference that has eluded them for three seasons.
