BOCA RATON, Fla. – Shane McCain tossed a complete game, three-hitter for Troy, but an unearned run sunk the Trojans in a 1-0 loss at Florida Atlantic in game two of the three game Sun Belt Conference series at FAU Stadium.
With two outs in the seventh and a runner at first base, McCain got Corey Keller to hit a lazy fly ball to right field. However, the ball came out of Danny Collins’ glove and Levi Meyer scored the only run of the game.
Six of Troy’s 12 losses this season have come by one run and eight of the 12 losses are by two runs or less. In Sun Belt play, five of Troy’s eight losses have been by one run and seven of the eight are by two runs or less.
Troy (31-12, 12-8 Sun Belt) had a chance to tie the game in the eighth after Tyler Vaughn led off the inning with a double; Vaughn finished 3-for-4 in the game. Jeremy Strawn wiggled out of the jam with fly out, a liner and a strikeout. The Trojans stranded seven runners in the game and were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
The loss was the first of the year for McCain (7-1), who struck out six and walked just one. FAU (26-17, 12-8) had a chance earlier in the seventh after Tyler Rocklein doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third with one out. McCain got Meyer to ground to short and Vaughn made a perfect throw to the plate to catch Rocklein.
Trae Santos had Troy’s only other hit in the game as Strawn (3-2) went eight innings to pick up the win. He struck out five and walked one before Hugh Adams closed out the game for his Sun Belt leading 13th save.
Logan Pierce finished 0-for-4 and saw his streak of reaching base safely end at 47 consecutive games.
The teams will play the rubber game of the series Sunday afternoon with first pitch set for noon (CDT).
