BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Troy men’s basketball team (7-11, 2-5) ran into a hot-shooting FAU Owls squad (10-9, 5-3), falling 80-59 in Boca Raton, Fla. A huge run by the Owls to start the second half proved to be too much for the Trojans.
“To be competitive against a pretty good basketball team like FAU, you have to be able to score,” said head coach Don Maestri. “That scoreless streak was the downfall for us in the second half.”
The Owls began the second half with a quick 17-2 run to take a commanding 19 point lead and never looked back, maintaining their lead for the majority of the half. Greg Gantt scored 23 points in the win, followed by 15 points by Stefan Moody.
The bright spots for the Trojans came from Antoine Myers and Josh Warren. Myers saw great success in getting to the basket, hitting all six of his shot attempts and finishing with 15 points and two rebounds. Warren had arguably his best game as a Trojan, scoring a season-high seven points and grabbing eight rebounds.
“Warren did a good job tonight,” Maestri sadi. “He played really hard tonight.”
The Owls were on fire all night, shooting 52.5 percent from the field (31-of-59) and 54.2 percent from beyond the arc (13-of-24). Troy had a decent night from the field, finishing at 43.1 percent (25-of-58) but struggled from range, hitting just 3-of-14 from beyond the arc (21.4 %). Troy won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Owls 35-29.
The Trojans trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half, but battled back to cut the lead to just four at the break. Warren was extremely active on the glass, grabbing three offensive rebounds in the opening frame and scoring seven points, mostly on put-backs.
Troy wraps up the Florida swing with a trip to Miami to face FIU on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. Live stats, video and audio will be available on the men’s basketball schedule page on TroyTrojans.com.
